History of Aerial Toppers
The next time you are driving down the road, look at people’s car aerials! You will be amazed at how many Aerial Toppers are out there! The humble Aerial Topper has come a long way in the last 40 years. In 1967 The first Aerial Toppers were made to promote awareness of the Union 76 Gas Station. The first toppers were spray painted orange by hand, dried, then screen printed, again by hand, with the blue 76 image, as a mini replica of the huge neon ball signs outside the 76 gas stations. By 1968 Approximately 350,000 balls had been produced and distributed, reaching a production of 750,000 balls per year by the mid 70’s. This was viral marketing at its best! Thousands of aerial toppers carried by customers carrying the advertisement with them on their car aerials wherever they go for the entire world to see, which is a constant reminder of your product or service. In 1991 Disney World created the very first "Mickey" antenna topper to celebrate "Walt Disney World's 20th Anniversary". Disney now has over 100 different designs. Aerial Toppers are fast becoming one of the hottest Disney collectibles, new styles are being introduced all the time. They are just the thing to add a touch of "character" to your car, but they also make great gifts, stocking fillers, basket fillers, party favours, and pencil toppers too. 1995 saw Jack in the Box restaurants launch their infamous Topper, According to the official Jack in the Box web site the company claims more than 17 million Jack in the Box Aerial Toppers have been handed out to their “guests” since 1995. By 1999 most Aerial toppers are made now out of EVA foam, much better than the “Styrofoam” balls of the past. The high-density soft foam material, is light weight, hard wearing and weather resistant, making mass production quick and easy. Hundreds if not thousands of designs are now available, many Licensed Toppers are now available too, NFL, NBA, Manchester United, Betty Boop, the Simpsons, Garfield, as well as many other Movie & TV characters. Not only do Toppers personalize your car, they make great, inexpensive gifts too, but most of all they're fun! Put a Smile on your Aerial!
